REQUIRED ENERGY SAVING: WHO IS IT GOING TO BE PROFITABLE FOR?

A few days ago we heard the news that the European Commission would oblige Hungary to pay a daily fine of € 15,444, having not yet transposed the EU Energy Efficiency Directive into their legal systems. This implementation is expected to take place this summer, a year after the expiry of the deadline of 5 June 2014. But what is about this directive, and why does the EU consider the importance of the introduction?

The introduction of EU directive which is about energy efficiency may firstly reminds company’s management of a great many unwanted administration and – although we do not know exactly that what will prescribe national regulations- probably the most concerned company (larger than 250 employees, revenue in excess of EUR 50 million) quickly want the way of mandatory energy audit over and joint liabilities.

In turn the energy efficient approach is not from the devil, in addition- besides the energy policy serves the interest all of us- the energy conscious companies can obtain significant cost reduction in course of performance and save a lot of money.

Why it is necessary?
In past years the European Union faced with not experienced challenges till now: increases its dependency from energy import, energy resources are available in limited quantity, the extent of climate change must confine, in the meanwhile have to adjust the situation after economic crisis. The conversion to the conscious, efficient energetics now is  an efficient resource for handling problems. Reduce energy consumption with 20% by 2020 was targeted not by chance. But the project for the present is not proceeded in appropriate extent- as it can be read in the directive.

What expect the EU?

According the directive the majority of businesses in the EU are small and medium-sized companies, they mean a huge energy potential, therefore states should set out incentive programs for small and medium sized companies to make energy audit.
It declares that large companies must be obliged for completion energy audit methodically, because with this significant energy saving will be attainable.
Local governments and other public institutes have to accept energy efficiency plans are based on obvious objectives, as well as keep in mind the energy efficiency of purchases.
Insomuch as the 40% of Union’s final energy consumption exposes buildings, states have to set out a long-term strategy goes beyond 2020 to incentive investments aiming the modernization of residential and commercial buildings. The rate of building’s modernization must raise, because the extant buildings have the most energy-saving potential by far the largest. By 2050 compared to 1990 the emission of gases are cause greenhouse effect will be reduced by 80-95%.

The energy audit not everything itself
Ranked requirements in the 8. article VI. appendix of 2012/27/EU  are equal with regulation of energy management system according to standard ISO 50001.
„For companies are operating according to the standard the liability take effect this year will not hold any new or change the obligation, because the directive and prescriptions of standard are overlapping each other." –Draw the company executive’s attention Zsuzsanna Kohl, the expert of FrameWork Hungary Kft. in her presentation about the directive.

Beyond that the aim of the standard not only the completion of energy audit (energy survey), but it provides the methodical, continuous development, control, the energy efficiency, generate actions based on  review or audits, as well as target the performance of energy conscious approach.
The mentioned standard ISO 50001 includes the expectations of European Union, but important to emphasize that companies are already have environmetal management (ISO 14001) to introduce ISO 50001 take only a little energy and resource input. In long term a consistently performed energy management system in turn- laws and liabilities or not- create value not just in environmental aspect, but in level of expenses literally.
